The Good and Bad

when you open your mouth

'From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced. The lips of the righteous know what finds favor, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.' Proverbs 10:31-32

perverse - adjective (google)

  1. (of a person or their actions) showing a deliberate and obstinate desire to behave in a way that is unreasonable or unacceptable, often in spite of the consequences.

what is the definition of perverseness in the Bible?

deliberately deviating from what is good. synonyms: perversity. type of: evil, evilness. the quality of being morally wrong in principle or practice.

this is adding to the other devotions about what happens when you open you mouth - something good or bad, edifying or destructive comes forth. if you actually took the time to think about what you’re going to say, you’ll likely not have to eat the words that are spoken.

when done with good intentions and right heart, what is said can provide wisdom, healing, and be very soothing. pain, hurt, and anger for the times you spew hot lava on everyone. one is healthy, rewarding, and is welcomed; the other unwholesome and needs to be silenced.

still actively working on using my mouth to uplift, speak life into, comfort, and not to teardown, belittle, frighten, to find favor with others and not be shutdown. takes work and i’m doing everything i can to improve this area of my life.

Father God, thank you that you have kept me from a speaking perversely of others. instead of turning on people and bringing shame to you, please continue to help me in this area of my life that those who i interact with know of your love and feel it. in Jesus’ name i pray, amen!
