Listening and Following to Your Parents
not always easy, but so important…
17 Now Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. ~1 samuel 17:17-19, 45-50~
going back to yesterday’s devo on following instructions, in verse 17 we find that david was given instruction by his father to go and bring food for his brothers, and some to their commanders, who were out in the battlefield as their dad was concerned how his other kids were doing. this might not seem much in the story of david and goliath, yet if it weren’t for david’s obedience to his father, this event may not have happened.
going back to doing what you are told when The Lord speaks, same applies when The Word says to honor your mother and father (ephesians 6:2, taken from exodus 20:12, deuteronomy 5:16), and this comes with a promise….things will go well for you.
because i didn’t have my dad for a majority of my young life, i never did has the structure and guidance that a child at that age needs. while my mom tried her best, i was a rebel and certainly a serious handful to deal with. fortunately we do have a loving Heavenly Father who does care, does speak to us, wants what’s best, and only asks that we follow His Son, Jesus, His commands. since coming to know Him i’ve been given the opportunity to work on this area of my life. when i believe He is speaking or have asked me to do something, i try to confirm that it is and then move forward.
Father God, help me to always be connected to you through your Word, trusting in your promises so that - “it may go well with me.” i do want to hear from you and follow through with what you are asking of me. may it bring you glory, honor, and praise. in Jesus’ name i pray, amen!
