dangerous prayer series

speak to me - august 16, 2020

If we pray, “God, will you speak to me?” Are we ready for what He might say? Throughout the Bible we read of examples of God speaking to His kids and sometimes what he says isn’t so easy to hear. Jesus encourages us to seek Him in order to hear His voice. It’s possible that while God does want to speak to us, that we just might be too busy and moving too fast to hear from Him. Am I slowing down enough to hear and process what God is saying to be through His Word or through others? While we’re asking God to speak, let’s be sure to pray that we would listen.

break my heart - August 9, 2020

What truly breaks your heart on behalf of God? It’s a challenging question for sure. Often times statements like ‘that just breaks my heart’ connect us with a kingdom value of compassion but what do we do with it? Is it ok to pray for God to break my heart? The danger in praying, ‘God, break my heart for what breaks yours,’ is that He might actually do it. Then we’ll have to ask Him, “Ok, now what?” Let’s connect with God’s heart at a deeper level as we think about this prayer.

Scriptures: Acts 9:15-16Romans 9:1-3

give me boldness - August 2, 2020

When the early church was birthed, it faced some major opposition. The existing religious system was threatened by it’s passion, it’s growth but especially by the power with which the apostles spoke. When faced with serious conflict like physical assault and jail time they could have backed down. Instead they asked for boldness. They knew that their boldness would not always be rewarded by support or popularity in this life but their reward was in being known by God and obeying Him. Praying this prayer means that we have to be ready for whatever will happen as a result of trusting God with our next step.

search my heart - july 26, 2020

One of the most challenging prayers we could pray is, ‘God, search my heart.’ Why? Because God knows exactly who we are and what our motives are. God can see past our perceived virtue and look right at what’s really happening. It takes courage and humility to pray these words but they may be the most important words we speak before a holy God.

Scriptures: Psalms 139:23-24Psalms 139:1

Everyone is a Gift

Knowing God is the First Step to Knowing Myself Have you ever had a caricature drawn of yourself? You sit there while an artist takes a marker, looks at you, looks at the paper, and repeats this for about five minutes until the piece of art is completed. Typically, there are two reactions to caricatures. Usually, what happens is that these pieces of art highlight your most distinct characteristics that the artist notices; that is where the name comes from. Your love or disdain for the finished product will likely depend on your appreciation or dislike for those distinct features that stand out to the artist.

Most of us constantly create caricatures of God, ourselves, and others. We can not separate the way we see God, ourselves, and others from the way we uniquely respond to each other. Although we may not be drawing them with pen and paper, we create them in our minds. The root of most of our identity issues comes from misidentifying the character of God. Once we have a proper view of the character of God, we can begin to recognize that all people are gifts from God with gifts to share. ~Pastor Adam Narciso~

We Grow Our Gifts Together

SCRIPTURE: Acts 9:1–31 MAIN IDEA: God uses others to help grow our gifts.

1. God uses others to help you see clearly. ● SCRIPTURE: “Now there was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, calling, ‘Ananias!’ ‘Yes, Lord!”’ he replied. The Lord said, ‘Go over to Straight Street, to the house of Judas. When you get there, ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying to me right now. I have shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming in and laying hands on him so he can see again.’ ‘But Lord,’ exclaimed Ananias, ‘I’ve heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem! And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon your name.’ But the Lord said, ‘Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.’ So Ananias went and found Saul. He laid his hands on him and said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized.” (v. 10–18)

2. God uses others to help clear the way. ● SCRIPTURE: “Saul’s preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in Damascus couldn’t refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. After a while some of the Jews plotted together to kill him. They were watching for him day and night at the city gate so they could murder him, but Saul was told about their plot. So during the night, some of the other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the city wall. When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to meet with the believers, but they were all afraid of him. They did not believe he had truly become a believer! Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.” (v.23–27)

3. God uses others to keep us on mission. ● SCRIPTURE: “He debated with some Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to murder him. When the believers heard about this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus, his hometown. The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.” (v. 28–31) ~Pastor Jay Miura~
