Where do you get your financial security from?
do you trust god with your finances?
'Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath. ' Deuteronomy 8:18
one of the questions that plays in my head when i begin to worry or become concerned when money is running low is - do i truly believe that God will and is going to provide? can i trust Him for a financial blessing when it seems my need is so great now?
regardless of what has happened in my life, the answer has been a resounding “YES” as He is nothing but faithful and His promises can be trusted. the only true source of my finances and the one who supplies all of my and my family’s needs.
while i no longer have doubts that He does, the devil still knows how to plant fear, leading to anxiety, and careless worrying for naught.
'Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.' Matthew 6:27, 34
on the flip side, i have come to a better understanding and peace about my financial situations because i DO KNOW that God is in control and is taking care of whatever my need is, even though i cannot always see it, especially whatever is happening to me right now, and it is ok.
' “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. ' Matthew 6:31-33
the end of verse 30 is very telling - why do you have so little faith? in the times i have suffered, made mistakes, failed, and struggled, and when negative thoughts creep in, this is one theme or point that can’t be glossed over. it is a fundamental tenet which requires one to be resolute and unwavering if we truly trust and believe that our God will get us through in whatever situations we are in.
in our daily lives that means we do not depend on our jobs, side hustle, our savings and investments for financial security; we trust God, implicitly, to give us what we need. not that we do not need these things; our Heavenly Father provided you/us that job, the raise, our extra income, grew our savings, etc.
He is the source; like the illustration of being the well that won’t run out, we get our living water from the reservoir, not the faucet, bottle, or water dispenser. even if one job doesn’t work out, He can easily provide another; that opportunity didn’t materialize, He can open another door. you get the picture - with Jesus nothing is impossible (matthew 17:20) and are told that God will never leave nor forsake us (hebrews 13:5).
as shared in my post yesterday, even though i am going through a tough time financially, God has been there for my family and i. while i do not have the same comfort zone (savings, investments, etc.), we do not lack - we still have our home, our clothes on our back, food to eat, and i’m still able to work and make money to pay for what we need. is it harder, yes, but not without its rewards.
dear Heavenly Father, thank you very much that you have helped me to see the errors of my ways when it comes to finances. i no longer love money as i once did; i no longer desire all the worldly things that once pre-occupied my mind and days; i no longer covet what others have.
while i may have lost much “possessions” with the poor decisions i’ve made, i’m so grateful that you help me to appreciate what i do have. you shower us with unconditional love, shown us mercy and grace, opened doors and blessed us with favor, even replacing our pain and sadness for your peace and joy - what a lopsided relationship. you take all of my junk and give me your best, your all.
i do ask for your Holy Spirit to guide me in all my financial matters. that i will no longer, impulsively, make rash decisions nor ones of selfish desires. may i never forget that you are Jehovah Jireh, our God that provides. may i always seek your face, your counsel in all that i do. that i will make the best choices possible while honoring you. in Jesus’ name i pray, amen!
